The Encore Garden Party
17 July 2011
We don’t know where they get their influence from but Denna and Brian Oliver obviously have friends in very high places. How else could they have arranged for Sunday’s Garden Party to have such lovely sunny weather? It was showery as we arrived and as we left but between whiles we basked in the sun.
Their garden was looking as beautiful as ever although Denna was sure it would have looked better if she hadn’t been away. As we all know, gardeners are never satisfied. There was a very good attendance considering many people must have been very doubtful about coming without galoshes and sou’westers.
We ate and drank well, bought books, plants and signed up for the silent auction. Danuta was nearly pipped at the post for the vacuum cleaner but Phil’s 50% increase was deemed illegal. Gill modelled a fur coat and didn’t want to take it off, so went home with it. (Hopefully, this will guarantee hot weather from now until October.)
The improvisations introduced by Bruce two years ago were given another go with new scenarios and new volunteers. Carol Shepherd, why aren’t you on the stage already? Much type-casting went on: Peter Millest, drunk at a works party; John Cass on the side of the law; a demented Ann Law and Brian reverting to childhood very easily.
All in all, we had a very enjoyable day and raised nearly 400 euros!
